The Diet Program War

Everyone has seen the television commercials for various weight-loss nutritional programs, such as Jenny Craig and Nutrisystem. Many celebraties have endorsed one or the other or both. Now, consumers are taking on the Nutrisystem vs Jenny Craig debate. Customer review sites are reporting a marked increase in this hot debate, and it appears that Nutrisystem reviews overwhelmingly are better than those for Jenny Craig.

One of the main complaints heard from Jenny Craig users was that the cost of the programs is just too high, averaging a monthly expense of $500 – $650, including food, delivery and service fees. On review sites, most customers feel that the Jenny Craig program is just not cost effective, especially given that their weight loss progress is pretty much the same as it is using Nutrisystem.

Using review sites, Jenny Craig customers say they feel like they were overcharged for services and products. Some customers complain about Jenny Craig’s one-year contracts, which reportedly are impossible to cancel. Allegedly, former Jenny Craig employees have spilled the beans and have said that the company imposes a sales quota on its consultants. The consultants then feel the heat and put pressure on customers to purchase the higher-priced services and products. If, indeed, these allegations are true, it would explain the wide gap in price structures between the Jenny Craig and Nutrisystem weight loss programs.

On the other end of the spectrum, customers have been giving Nutrisystem rave reviews. Participants in the Nutrisystem program say they feel like the Nutrisystem staff truly is interested and cares about its customers and that the company fosters a friendly and supportive environment. Nutrisystem customers also report that they feel they are getting their money’s worth in products and services. And Nutrisystem customers are reporting weight loss progress that is in line with those reported by Jenny Craig customers. It would seem that the bottom line is pretty simple. If Nutrisystem is more affordable, offers comparable services and appealing meals, it makes sense to forgo Jenny Craig and go with Nutrisystem’s low-glycemic weight loss and nutritional program, especially for those who are newly entering the world of commercial nutritional and weight loss programs.
